A preliminary launch date to the server is 1 July 2025, subject to having at least 7 whitelisted players, and enough hands on deck to handle all the tasks related to smoothly running the server. You can apply-to-join now on Discord!
Yes, please, there's so much to do. Looking actively for people to help with:
If it sounds like something you'd be interested in, do mention it in your application!
No, there is a whitelisting system in place, ensuring that people passionate about roleplaying have a space to express their Dune stories in.
The server caters specifically to players that enjoy roleplaying as the primary way to engage with the Dune universe. From our perspective, the framework described in the rules is fairly lightweight, doing little more than assuring fair interactions and a self-governing server. However, do consider whether a roleplaying experience might be for you, you may enjoy other RP-light servers instead.
However, do not be intimidated by the rules either. We are very friendly, and will gladly support you through learning the ropes of roleplay, just reach out to any member of the server on Discord!
Additionally, the server is self-governing via the High Council, formed of the server admins and one representative from each approved player faction. Thus, if the community will feel the need to relax the rules over time, they may do so.
The server admins did the minimal set up to get the server going. However, decisions will be made in the High Council going forward. It's formed of the server admins, and a representative from each approved player faction. My hope is that as time goes on, and as the community evolves, to slowly shift as much decision making as possible towards the High Council. I believe that strong communities are self-governing communities, and that all aspects of running the server should be decided by the actual people who enjoy playing on it. Thus, outside of very basic Section 1 rules, any further decisions or rule changes will be handled through the High Council.
The honest answer right now is: I don't know. I hope not to, and I have a few quid put aside to start things up. I will do everything I can to make it feasible long-term with no upfront requirements. Which does mean we would likely need to run on a donation and volunteer basis. However, I am very uncertain now about how that might play out medium term.
In any case, if you have any thoughts regarding this, or experience running private community servers, do reach out, I'd love to learn from your experience.
But no, there wouldn't be an upfront cost to start with, and I'm not even accepting donations right now. However, I think it's in everybody's best interest to have full transparency about it, that's why it's included in the early FAQ.
